Why roles and permissions become important as a company grows

Giving everyone the same access is convenient at first, but it quickly creates unnecessary risk and complexity.

In a very small company, everybody often knows everything. That works until it does not.

As the organisation grows, different people begin carrying different responsibilities. Employees need access to their own work. Team leaders may need to manage projects or working-time information. Payroll staff may need reports. Administrators may need configuration tools.

Giving everyone the same access is convenient in the beginning, but it quickly creates unnecessary risk and unnecessary complexity.

Access should follow responsibility

A good workforce platform should reflect how responsibility is actually distributed in the company. That means giving people access to the information and tools they need without automatically giving them access to everything else.

Roles and permissions are often discussed as a security feature, but they also improve usability. A worker who only needs a small part of the system should not have to navigate an entire administration environment.

As companies grow, good access management becomes part of good operational design.
